a moms 1 year old car suddenly took up the habit of chewing the heel part of her and mine shoes (while not wearing of course)- puting holes and tearing apart a little ; she tried giving it some leather article to chew on, no dice; i would just yell "Bad kitty!thats a bad kitty!", well, not really, but i like my shoes intact. any ideas?
Why does my moms cat act like a dog- chew shoes?
Don't leave your shoes where she can get to them, put them away, like in a closet. Get some cat toys (catnips toys, furry mice, balls, paper bags). Or get a friend for your cat. Your cat is too old, but young cats do that when they are teething. Give her her own piece of shoe from an old pair. She will get bored with them soon and she will find something else to chew on! Remember, she is just a kid!.
Reply:Once you see the cat with the shoes take them away and distract him/her with a toy. Do this everytime you see him/her with a shoe. Eventually this might work.
Reply:Your cat sounds hysterical. My Tom Cat likes to roll in the mud, so understand the part dog/part cat problems! You are probably finding out that cats do not respond well to punishment, they are very, very stubborn. However, if you play with her after she tears up your shoes, she will take that as positive re-inforcement and do it more. Instead, get a spray bottle with fairly good range and fill it with water. Give her a good spray every time she goes for shoes. This will take a little while, but she will stop eating your shoes while you are home. While you are home being the key part of the sentence. I don't believe there is any behavior modifications that work for cats when you are not around, save a closed closet door. Sometimes, keeping the closet door shut is just the best alternative! Good luck with your dat/cog, whatever :-)
Reply:It's quite possible the cat is attracted by the scent of the shoes in which case, you could rub them with some eucalyptus oil. The scent alone will be enough to deter the cat from chewing the shoe, although the obvious answer is to remove all shoes from temptations way.
If your cat enjoys the chewing sensation, try giving them tough chunks of meat to eat as that will ensure they spend more time focused on their meal instead of your shoes.
Reply:LOL, sounds like my daschund who used to climb treees to get to rats, haha!
Reply:She might just like the rubberness of shoes or something is bothering her teeth. Try giving your mom's cat some dry food or vitamins. Some cats have weird habits like my cat. He sometimes just sits on some shoes (even if someone is in them) and goes to sleep. Other times, he bites and starts eating wires from a computer or something.
Reply:i have 3 cats and 2 of them loves shoes since they where babies. what i do is keep my shoes where they belong in the closet. the only one i keep out at all time are my house flippers i don't care what they do with it. oh and i gave them my old shoes too. lol. they leave the other ones alone when i give them one
