Starting conversation with strangers. Is any topic too "weird"?

How do you start a conversation... particularly with women? I have trouble, as is, finding things to say to people I already know of either gender. But strangers? Women Im interested in meeting and possibly pursuing? What do you say? How do you break the ice? I always feel uncomfortable, like they will think me weird or become uncomfortable by me, for the topic I initiate or what have you. I know that confidence and being comfortable in your own shoes is a big part of success. But are there any tips you can give me, guidance? I know there arent any real rules about what -to- do... but surely there are rules about what -not- to do.

Religion, if the pope came up to me to talk about it I'd have to say easy freak. Just makes me uncomfortable.
Reply:politics and religion are both excellent controversy generators, you want to avoid them as conversational openers -- stay with something safe, like the weather, newspaper headline(as long as it's not political) or somethng really dumb like your at a bus stop and yu just ask do you know what time the # 6 comes or Excuse me do you have the time, I think my watch stopped or whatever ... just a question a person won't have trouble answering without feeling personally invaded
Reply:When you first meet a woman, don't ask her if she 'spits or swallows'!
