What/who are asylum seekers?

Im reading 'walk in my shoes' and a part of our english assignment is to research asylum seekers. Can you please give me a clear definition and explain in detail? I need as much information as possible.

What/who are asylum seekers?
Someone looking for protection from another government.

I hate it when Teachers try to mold a mind to their political thoughts.
Reply:asylum seekers are people that spoke true to power in their home counties, and have to leave because the cost would be death or worst.
Reply:Asylum essential means to seek protection. Political Asylum is often claimed by illegal immigrants to gain protection from abuses by their government. In Ky, a woman recently lost her 4 year old child due to a murder. It was discovered the woman is here illegally and actually has a several year old warrant in Los Angeles for deportation but she fled. She was seeking political asylum. Now she is fighting for rights to bury her son in her home of Guatemala and then return thinking she should get citizenship. Political Asylum persons usually fear for their lives by going home yet this woman wants to travel freely to and from her home country. The police chief has signed off on requesting her to stay till they find out who committed the murder. While I am sympathetic to her losing her child, she is still wanted and she created the situation. Why should we feel sorry for illegal immigrants who were lying to stay in this country. She is willing to return home therefore political asylum does not apply.
