Being a first level entry Correctional Officer in Texas?

I'm going to have my screening test on Tuesday where I would take the test, and hopefully pass it. I'm 18 years old, just graduated High School today. I have a few questions to ask

1. Do Correctional Officers get free housing if you stay too far away from the prison? or reduce housing?

2. What type of schedules do they usually get?

3. Will it be hard for me to get respect , by both the staff, and the prisoners, since I'm 18, and 5'4 ?

4. Will i be able to have a second part time job selling shoes (what im doing currently)?

Being a first level entry Correctional Officer in Texas?
as for the first question ? i dont know..

schedule's? more then likely you'll be a fill in at first. getting the odd job's from rec. crew to walking the halls. or as a rover. doing all the odd's and end stuf.

respect? hehehe.. not for the first 6 month's anyway. respect is earned. not just given in prison. but dont feel to bad everyone has to go through it.

and yes you can have a parttime job . anything you can get is good . i deliver'ed pizza for a year to help with bill's
Reply:1) No you do not get free housing and there's no reduced housing unless you get rental assistance through the state.

2) I do believe the TDC officers work 8 hours shifts, could be wrong, and the rookies are going to train, most likely, on all three shifts then will be assigned to the midnight shift after training.

3) Respect is earned by the inmates and staff. The staff won't disrespect you but they expect to be treated with respect.

4) You can have a second job but I would ask the supervisor if that's allowed.

Good luck on the test and if you pass you'll be known as a "Boss" not as a C.O. in the prison. Be prepared to have urine and feces thrown at you. Don't stand directly in front of the doors when you're dealing with the prisoners for safety reasons. Don't go in with an attitude and think you know it all because you don't and you won't gain any respect. If you have questions, don't be afraid to ask your fellow officers. And most importantly, don't be afraid to ask for help if you don't think you can handle a situation. It's better to wait for help to arrive than to put yourself and others in danger!
Reply:1. No you do not get free housing. The job is either paid by the hour or salary.

2. There are three shifts you can work. Usually the shifts are 8am-4pm, 4pm-12am, 12am-8am.

3. To gain respect in a prison, you have to give respect. If you walk into any building and act like you are king ****, nobody is going to give you respect, and in jail that will get you killed. If you respect the prisoners, they may take a liking to you, however no prisoner will ever be your friend even if you think they think you are cool.

4. Depends on what shift you are put on.
